You are in Shanghai, with small children: You need to have a plan. Not all hospitals will take you with your child at 2am in the morning; most will want cash upfront; some won't have the kind of specialized services you are looking for.

You need to take responsibility for where you will go and what you will do in case of an emergency. This means visiting the children hospitals that are close to you; finding out about their registration and payment procedures; their opening hours; and whether they have any English-speaking staff (if relevant). Decide for yourself how much cash you need to have spare in the house or in a Union-Pay account, but as a rule of thumb, 20,000RMB is what you will probably need. Write an emergency plan in English and in Chinese (have someone translate it if you need help) and stick it on your fridge, so everyone who cares for your kids knows what to do and where to go. Include information on medical conditions, your children's blood group, and any known allergies, even if that means saying they have none! Leave copies of your children's passports and yours as well as your insurance cards. This can save a lot of time and frustration in a real emergency.

Above all, be prepared, so if anything does happen to your children and it's the middle of the night, you have a plan and you know where to take them to for help.
