Safe drinking water for baby?

Question posted 24.05.13 // In All Questions, Babies

Question:

Hi could you please give me some advice about which drinking water is safe for a 6 month old baby, e.g. the (Nestle) purified water that is delivered in 10-liter-bottles? Unfortunately I can not find any information on its mineral content, not can I read the information given on most of the bottled (mineral) waters in the shops.

What to do about suspected clubfoot

Question posted 10.04.13 // In All Questions, Babies

Question:

Hi at birth the paediatrician said my son might have club foot, and that we would need to keep an eye on it. I was so overwhelmed with everything though I didn’t properly get to ask him what he meant, and what we needed to do. So, please can someone from Bumps & Babes help? How do I keep an eye on it i.e. when should I get it checked again more thoroughly? He’s now 3 weeks old. Thanks!

Weaning on a plant-based diet

Question posted 10.04.13 // In All Questions, Babies

Question:

I'd appreciate any advice on how to wean a baby on a plant- based diet. My daughter is 7 months old and while I am still debating whether this is what I want to do I want to gather all information first and then make a responsible decision. Currently she has regular baby formula which obviously contains animal products and I am planning on giving this to her for as long as it takes. Thank you.

Red scaly patches

Question posted 20.02.13 // In All Questions, Babies

Question:

Hi I just noticed my six month old has some red, scaly patches on his arms, like eczema. Creaming them seems to help; is there anything else I should consider? Will it go away as he grows older? Should I take him in to see a dr when we return to shanghai? It's so cold there at the moment I didn't notice them back home. Thank you so much for your help."

My 7 months old son suddenly refuses the bottle

Question posted 13.02.13 // In All Questions, Babies

Question:

Dear expert,

My 7 1/2 months old son refuses the bottle ever since we came back to Shanghai after our Xmas break. He also doesn't want to drink from a cup, sippy cup, etc. I want to stop breastfeeding him, but need to get him back into drinking again before I actually can stop.

He started drinking bottles with breastmilk from when he was 3 weeks old. When he was 9 weeks old, I went back to work. He then drank 2 or 3 bottles with breastmilk when I was at work and I feeded him myself when I was at home (in the mornings and evenings). We never had any trouble with feeding him the bottle. We started with solids when he was 6 months old and he quite likes his fruit and veggies with chicken. However, I'm quite concerned he doesn't eat/drink enough during the day. This is what he gets at the moment:

7:00 am full breast feed

9:00 am a big bowl of different fruits with cereals, biscuit and breastmilk

Noon (12) a big bowl of cereals/porridge with breastmilk

3:00 pm a bowl of veggies with potato/sweet potato/rice, a little bit of chicken and breastmilk

5:30 pm full breast feed (I am trying to change this feed into solids so the 7 pm is a proper full feed)

7:00 pm full breast feed

At the moment I still have enough breastmilk in the freezer for another month. We will change it into Formula once it runs out.

Have you got tips to get my son (back) into drinking bottles or a (sippy) cup? I know breastmilk is the best, but he has had it exclusively for 6 months, he's nearly 8 months and I way 5 kg less than when I got pregnant. It's taking a lot of my energy. I have done it with great pleasure but it's been enough.

Many thanks!

Can my 10-month old drink cow's milk?

Question posted 20.01.13 // In All Questions, Babies

Question:

Hi there I am confused about whether it is safe to give cow's milk to my ten month old daughter. One friend says no because there is a risk of allergy (but cheese and yoghurt are ok?), the other says it's too nutrient low which is why I should use formula, and one friend already gives her 11 month old cows milk, not formula, because she says she supplements iron and other nutrients anyway. Who is right?

My husband thinks I'm crazy for persevering cos my baby is clearly not getting enough but I love breastfeeding and want to continue cos I know it's best for my child.. help!

How to stay on the UK's vaccination schedule once in China? I am moving to Nanchang.

Question posted 29.11.12 // In All Questions, Babies, Toddler +, Life in China

Question:

Hi, I'm wondering if you can help me. I am moving from the UK next May to live in Nanchang. I will be moving with a 3yr old boy and a new born who is due in Feb. I am really worried about vaccinations for my newborn and can't find any information about where I could complete a course of vaccinations in Nanchang, how young I can give a baby vaccinations like rabies and Japanese Encephalitis and how I can keep my 3yr old's boosters up to date. We are planning to be in Nanchang for about 2.5-3 yrs so I would like to stay on the UK's vaccination schedule if possible which I think means having hep A, B, Rabies, Japanese Encephalitis and BCG as travel vaccines. Is there a clinic in Shanghai which could help me? At the moment my GP in the UK is advising we have our first set of vaccines in the UK at 8 weeks but won't advise any further as to when we could have the travel vaccinations. Many thanks in advance,
